The ewe drum comes from the Ewe tribe who originate from the Volta region of Ghana. The traditional dance using the ewe drum is called Agbadza, one of the oldest dances in West Africa. The Agbadza (meaning "dance for all") was originally a war dance but is now a recreational dance performed at funerals, festivals and other social gatherings. The ewe drum uses goat skin for the drumhead and is often played by hand and stick. The height if the drum combined with hard sema wood shell produces a disctinctive warm tone.
